About Magazines and Newspapers in Central Library
| FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) |
- How do I search for magazine information?
- Like other formats, magazine and newspaper holdings and location
information can be searched and found in the Library Computer
Catalog. (Searching tips: You may search by title or by subject
in Easy Search. You may also search by keywords in Advanced Search
and limit your results to the "Magazines/Periodicals Serials"
format). If you find bibliographic information, check to see if
Central Library carries the title and has the holding you're looking
for. If yes, you can bring your bibliographic information to any
public services desk for retrieval. If you need more help with
searching our Library Computer Catalog, please ask information
staff for assistance.
- May I check out magazines?
- Popular Library Magazines collection, YA comics and Children's
magazines collection are the only three circulating collections.
They can be checked out for 7 days. The rest of the magazines,
newspapers and microfilms are all reference.
- Where do I find current and back issues?
- Current magazines and newspapers are displayed in the Magazines
and Newspapers Browsing Area on the Lobby Level. Some subject
specific, current magazines are displayed in the subject departments.
For instance, the Business/Sciences department on the 3rd Floor
has current business/sciences related and Health Information Center
magazines, displays, etc. Most of the back issues are housed in
the Garden Level Stacks. (Stacks on the Garden Level is a holding
area that includes back issues of magazines, newspapers, and other
materials). You may request these items for retrieval at any public
services desk.
- Where do I find the Commercial Appeal?
- One copy of the current issue of the Commercial Appeal is
in the Browsing Area on the Lobby Level. Another is on the 2nd
Floor in the Information LINC area. Paper copies for the current
month and past several months are housed in the Information LINC
area and in the Garden Level Stacks until microfilms for these
issues are received. Paper copies of the CA are discarded once
microfilm is received. Microfilms of the CA are housed in History.
Please check the Library Computer Catalog and with staff for information.

here.
- What if the article I need is on microfilm?
- Most of our library's microfilms are located on the 2nd Floor
in the Information LINC area. Some local interest microfilms are
located on the 4th floor in the History Department. Both departments
have microfilm reader machines to use and print copies if needed.
- What if Central Library doesn't have the title I need?
- You can check to see if it is available full-text in Gale
Databases. If not, check with the Interlibrary Loan Department
(415-2705) to see if copies of the article are available through
Interlibrary Loan.
